I followed your suggestion and stopped to inspect the flowers of the Bird of Paradise bush. You're right, they are really neat to look at up close. Now I'm seeing a vining plant blooming all over that has bright red flowers on it. What would it be?

I believe the showy vine you are asking about is the trumpet vine (campsis radicans). It is a sturdy, easy-to-grow vine that rewards you each summer with a glorious show of flowers. All along Fourth Street, from El Pueblo southward, they are blooming their hearts out now. You can see them draping gracefully over adobe walls, growing up ancient cottonwood stumps, and covering chain link fence so thoroughly you can't see what's on the other side. …
