* Gov. Richardson wants to host NFL, NASCAR, tennis, boxing events

SANTA FE -- Gov. Bill Richardson's game plan for New Mexico includes a major role for sports.

''I'd like to see New Mexico become a sports Mecca,'' Richardson said during an interview last week in his office at the Capitol. ''I'd like us to host NASCAR, bigtime boxing, a national tennis tournament.''

Richardson believes sports would be a good way to help New Mexico with recognition and economic development.

''In the past, the state could have done more," he said. "The state should be like a partner. We have to be supportive.

''I know we're too small to have a major league or NFL team. But I think it's important to promote New Mexico as a site for athletic events.''
