At long last, Janet Trujillo loves running. But how much? Every day, as she tries to balance a running career and a virtually full-time job, that love is tested.

So far, love conquers all.

For the better part of a decade, Trujillo was a talented and successful, yet reluctant, distance runner.

At Eldorado High School, Trujillo (class of '93), she starred in basketball and soccer as well as track and field. Running was far and away her least favorite of the three. Yet, because of Trujillo's slight stature, college scholarship offers in basketball and soccer didn't exactly pour in.

At Auburn University, running paid for her mechanical-engineering degree. She came home in 1998 with no intention to continue competing. But when Albuquerque coach Russ Dryer recognized Trujillo and invited her to train with Dryer's wife, Elva, a world-class distance runner, Trujillo's competitive instincts kicked in. …
