Requiring Permits May Cut Down on False Alarms.(West Side Journal)

Rio Rancho residents and business owners will soon be required to purchase alarm permits from the city.

An ordinance mandating alarm owners to hold a permit with the city goes into effect July 1.

The Department of Public Safety proposed the ordinance in an attempt to cut down on the number of false alarms police were responding to in the city.

In the last year, DPS has responded to almost 4,000 false alarms, said Officer John Francis, DPS spokesman.

Between June 12, 2002 and June 12, 2003, the department responded to 4,048 alarm calls; 98 percent of them were false.

Francis said the volume of false alarms is taxing the department's resources. …
