"On your mark, get set, go," Colinas del Norte teacher Jill Black-Garcia says.

Seconds later she presses a stopwatch and two students release a marble into a maze of plastic spoons, straws, paperclips and paper cups, which are mounted on a cardboard box.

The helter-skelter obstacle course was made as part of Camp Invention -- a weeklong, hands-on science experiment for elementary students that ends today. "Marble-ous Inventions" allows students to experiment with gravity, friction and other laws of physics.

The camp is run by a private company and this year's participants paid approximately $200 to attend. …
