Woman Stricken By Bubonic Plague

Monkeypox, which has shown up in the Midwest, is not a worry in New Mexico so far.

But plague still is. The state's first human plague case of the season has been identified in Torrance County.

A 70-year-old woman was diagnosed with bubonic plague on Friday, according to Paul Ettestad, public health veterinarian with the state Department of Health. She had become ill a few days earlier, and was hospitalized in Albuquerque, he said Monday. She was in stable condition.

Last year, there were two plague victims from New Mexico, Lucinda Marker and John Tull. They got widespread publicity when they were diagnosed with the disease on a trip to New York City. …
