I expected to find "Dirty Girls Social Club" a familiar read. After all, I am a college-educated urban Latina with a close-knit group of college girlfriends. We have personality, style and charm.

Author Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez put together a funny, smart and sexy set of characters. Then she gave them flaws, flab and lives that created a pretty good story for her debut novel.

Valdes-Rodriguez, an Albuquerque resident, created believable character conflicts -- a lesbian afraid to tell her friends of her sexual orientation, an abused wife fearing a ruined reputation and a materialistic businesswoman afraid to accept love. …
