Some Worry Changes Could Lead to Sprawl

Bernalillo County commissioners are taking the first steps toward assuming more control over growth outside Albuquerque's city limits.

But their action is already drawing disdain from planned-growth advocates, such as 1000 Friends of New Mexico.

The commission last week took several actions intended to enforce a bill passed by the state Legislature that gives the county more clout over growth and development.

The bill restricts the zoning authority of Albuquerque beyond the city limits and gives the county veto power over annexations. The city previously had some power over planning decisions in the "extraterritorial" zone -- the five-mile ring around Albuquerque. …
