Depending on your point of view, both good and bad things came in twos this spring.

The apricot trees bloomed and froze twice insuring that apricots will be scarce this summer. Everyone agrees that is bad.

Then, we went through two police chief changes. Many people don't know if this is good or bad, but when Taosenos vetoed Wal-Mart's plans for a super-sized edition of their store, 60 percent thought it was good, and the rest bad, according to the survey.

Good reasons abounded for not allowing the store to transform into its Mighty Morphin Power Ranger model. The results are visible in Las Vegas, Alamosa and Espanola. Fears of a boarded up old store, harm to small businesses, profits leaving the region, and running high wage grocery jobs out of town were all valid. There was talk of preserving our cultural and scenic heritage and more talk about Wal-Mart's employment practices. …
