Udall Criticizes Proposed Park Cuts.(Final)

SANTA FE -- An apparent move by the Bush administration to empty many National Park Service positions -- including 29 full-time posts in the Santa Fe area -- in favor of privatization was decried Thursday by U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M.

"The (plan) jeopardizes natural resource management for corporate profit," Udall said.

Positions for firefighters, maintenance workers, fee collectors, resource managers, archaeologists, biologists and historians would eventually go to the private sector under the plan, Udall said.

A spokesman for the National Park Service's Intermountain Region, which includes New Mexico, said that plan is still in the draft stage. …
