Stop Siphoning Fund From Fire Protection.(Final)(Editorial)

EDITORIALS

Fire departments, particularly those in rural areas with small tax bases, aren't getting the funds they need to be prepared for the wildfire threat they face.

A fund created by the Legislature with a 3 percent tax on property and vehicle insurance premiums could do more to upgrade and maintain equipment. But the Legislature and governor have siphoned more than half the fund to unrelated purposes in recent years.

The Public Regulation Commission, which oversees the fund, has gone out on a limb to recommend that fire protection fund money be spent on the purpose specified in the law: fire protection. …
