Project Revisions To Save $400,000

The state Highway and Transportation Department will short-circuit the previous administration's decision to spend $4 million on a controversial new telephone and data system.

Agency officials announced Thursday that they will kill two aspects of the project that have come under fire, saving about $400,000. The rest of the upgrade should be completed in a month.

About 80 percent of the work had been completed when the highway administrators appointed by Gov. Bill Richardson temporarily halted work on the contract in January.

State officials said Thursday they had decided against completing the project. …
