Jazz orchestra to revel in spirit of Santamaria.(Venue)

The Albuquerque Latin Jazz Orchestra will honor the late Cuban-born percussionist Ramon "Mongo" Santamaria in concert tonight.

In the second of the evening's three sets, the orchestra will play a number of tunes associated with Santamaria, including "Watermelon Man," which Herbie Hancock wrote and Santamaria popularized 40 years ago. The composition has become a Latin jazz anthem.

The band also will play "Afro Blue," a work that Santamaria wrote, though John Coltrane made it into a jazz standard.

Another will be "Cal's Pals," which Cal Tjader wrote. Santamaria was one of the "pals" in the Tjader band at the time it was composed. …
