Greener Pastures Keep Wildfires at Bay.(Journal North)

Meteorologist Credits Moisture While early indications this spring revealed the potential for an explosive wildfire season, the flames haven't materialized thanks in part to just enough moisture to keep fire starts in check in northern New Mexico.

"There is a significantly decreased chance of a large catastrophic fire and that is probably for the rest of the fire season since the season ends July 4," said Chuck Maxwell, a meteorologist with the Southwest Area Predictive Services group in Albuquerque.

"The big story is that we are back to a sort of usual fire condition season in northern New Mexico," he said. "The only caveat is that if it dries out, it could increase quickly -- the underlying conditions are such that it could go back the other way. …
