State Tries To End Fight Over Access

SANTA FE -- The State Land Office may offer to trade more than 50,000 acres of state land in northern New Mexico, partly to end controversy over access to state trust land around White Peak in Colfax County.

The state land proposed for the swap is worth $22 million and is home to elk, bear, deer and turkey, state officials said.

Most of the acreage up for trade is in the White Peak area east of Angel Fire, which has been at the center of a battle involving hunters, the state Attorney General's Office and private landowners who've closed a road that leads to the state-owned land. …
