Expansion seems to be the theme for the week in Albuquerque's changing retail scene.

For example, Ernest Thompson Furniture recently expanded its furniture operations to include all-wood, hand made custom cabinetry for kitchens and bathrooms.

Susan Squires, formerly an independent design consultant with J. Wheeler Ltd. and The Branch Cabinetry, is the designer for the new cabinetry division.

Doreen Godwin, who owns Ernest Thompson Furniture with her husband, Mike Godwin, said the new division has been about 10 years in the making. She said the company has been quietly building custom cabinetry for some customers, but now there is sufficient demand to create a department.

"We saw this as an opportunity," Godwin said. …
