EL PASO -- A Palestinian businessman detained after a government raid on a Santa Fe Plaza jewelry store last month claims he was targeted because he refused to spy on other local Arabs for the FBI, his lawyer said.

An FBI spokesman in Albuquerque could not be reached Wednesday to comment on the claim.

A request to set bond for former Santa Fe resident Mahammad Ibrahim-Manasrah, 28, was denied by federal administrative Judge William Abbott during a hearing Wednesday at the U.S. immigration detention center in El Paso.

Ibrahim-Manasrah and his younger brother, Fayez, were among eight foreign nationals detained in Santa Fe on May 20 for questioning about their immigration status. …
