The Bernalillo Town Council has installed a revolving door on the police chief's office. Watching it spin, residents have to wonder whether politics has become more important than police work.

The revolutions started in January when the council inexplicably declined to renew the contract of former Chief William Relyea, who had been top cop since 1998.

They hired veteran Arizona policeman Wayne T. Wright as chief in March, but he turned in his badge before his first day after meeting with councilors. Mayor Charles Aguilar said Wright walked away because he didn't want to deal with Bernalillo's politics.
