Eight young women from four Girl Scouts councils around New Mexico received the highest award Monday a Girl Scout can earn.

Only senior Girl Scouts who demonstrate a commitment to their communities are eligible for the Gold Award.

The eight picked up their awards Monday at the Roundhouse.

The Gold Award is the most prestigious in scouting, said Barbara Kastner, director of fund development and communications for the Sangre de Cristo Council.

Three girls from the Sangre de Cristo Council, which serves 14 counties in northern New Mexico and Colorado, received the award. …
