Task Force To Look at Conservation; Mayor Vows Veto

Albuquerque city councilors narrowly approved creation of a task force on Monday that would study new water-conservation measures and report back next year.

"We have to wake up and seriously look at our water usage," said Councilor Eric Griego, who sponsored the resolution along with Michael Cadigan.

Mayor Martin Chavez has vowed to veto the bill, but the council made several changes Monday aimed at winning the mayor's support. Chavez said last month the resolution could threaten the city's plan to tap the Rio Grande for drinking water.

The council voted 5-3 to adopt the resolution after adding language intended to make it clear the proposal wouldn't interfere with the diversion project. …
