Officials Say Fault Lies With New Financial System

Albuquerque Public Schools isn't paying its bills on time, and some vendors say they have been owed tens of thousands of dollars for months.

Last month, school police officers were without cell-phone service for part of a day because Verizon Wireless cut off service for nonpayment.

Another vendor says it's an ongoing problem.

"We have to constantly stay on them," said Judy C'de Baca, Zanios Foods' chief financial officer.

Zanios does about $25,000 a week in business with APS and says the school system has owed it $84,000 for two months.

District officials say the problem lies with APS' conversion in January to a $7 million Lawson computerized financial system. …
