Finance Committee Considering Changes

Don't worry, you won't have to leash your cat.

The fines could increase under a proposal from City Councilor Carol Robertson Lopez to amend Santa Fe city pet laws.

Lopez has proposed higher fines for pet owners who scoff at licensing and spaying their animals, as well as new penalties and annual permit fees for exotic animals.

Lopez's changes would also raise the cost of retrieving your wayward dog or cat from the custody of city Animal Control officers.

Further, the cost of licensing your pet would increase. From $3 for a neutered animal and $10 for unneutered to $5 for a neutered and $75 for unneutered.

The increased fines would presumably encourage pet licensing and decrease the number of pets euthanized at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. …
