* This little town is shrinking but still has fans who will never leave

COYOTE -- An expansive vista, weathered red-rock mesas and, in the distance, the pinon-studded Jemez Mountains -- when you're in northern New Mexico, you're in the West.

But to live in this country as a school teacher, builder or rancher takes a lot of effort -- everything you've got, practically.

"People will, if they love it enough, they'll do anything to stay here," said Katherine Salazar, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Coyote Elementary School. "What can you say? The Lord kissed northern New Mexico when he made it."

Her husband, Elired Salazar, is a small rancher and general contractor with a degree in architecture, she said. …
