Part-Jicarilla Apache, part-African-American, teen overcame alienation to turn life around

Seven years ago, Margaret Noble arrived on the Jicarilla Apache reservation a stranger in a strange land. But her new place has been kind to her, providing her a place to live -- and learn some hard lessons.

Noble has grown up with two identities -- her mother is Jicarilla Apache, and her father is African-American. She says her struggles with racism, coupled with a troubled personal life, led her to turn to drugs and alcohol when she was about 12.

Her hands are marked with the travails of those years before she turned her life around -- now an honor student who is the bright star for the two Dulce High School teachers who mentored her and nominated her for the Making a Difference award. …
