People encounter God in different ways. I've learned not to make assumptions about how.

When I was quite young, my godmother gave me a book about faith. That slim volume disappeared long ago, so I can't refresh my mind as to what, in fact, it actually said, but I do remember its effect on me. I read it and realized: I need to be good. It can't be that hard. I just need to pay attention to what I think and do.

The next thing I knew, the book had been taken away from me. When I asked why, my parents told me that they thought it was influencing me in an unhealthy way. I took this to mean it's OK to be good, but suspect to be too good. We want no fanatics, no extremes of behavior here. Draw, but color inside the lines. Sing, but don't stray from the notes on the page. …
