A criminal trial involving Espanola Municipal Judge Charles Maestas will continue as scheduled, despite the death of the state's lead investigator, Karen Yontz.

State District Judge Michael Vigil denied prosecutors more time Friday to prepare for the trial, which begins June 11 with jury selection in Tierra Amarilla.

"These are unusual circumstances where the lead investigator is no longer here," Assistant Attorney General Julie Ann Meade told Vigil.

Yontz was shot and killed by Albuquerque police on May 2 after she robbed a bank there, authorities say.

The Attorney General's Office reported earlier this month it would likely be ready for trial, then filed a motion asking for more time. …
