Owner highlights a special cuisine every weekend

Part hole-in-the-wall, part coffee bar, part home-style kitchen, High Desert Cafe finds itself in an odd place, tucked into a corner of a shopping center at Montano NW and Taylor Ranch Road. Owner Martha Todd focuses on Caribbean specialties like Cuban sandwiches, jerk chicken, shredded beef stew, plantains and beans and rice. She also offers quiches, meatloaf, spanikopita, fresh fruit smoothies, Italian sodas, gourmet coffee drinks and a variety of ever-changing baked goods, including baklava, lemon bars, cheesecakes and cobblers.

The result is a mishmash of ethnic cuisines unified by obvious care for quality ingredients and flavor that won't offend anyone. …
