Las Vegas Faces State Penalties

Water tests and other monitoring at a closed landfill in Las Vegas, N.M., were performed sporadically over the past three years, but dangerous environmental conditions weren't detected, said an engineer for a firm that performed the tests.

Las Vegas City Hall is facing $285,000 in penalties brought by the state Environment Department this month over nine allegations related to the landfill and a transfer station, including that the city failed to monitor ground water at the site.

Water monitoring tests were done about once a year when the city's administration could afford it, said Peter Fant, an engineer with Souder, Miller and Associates, a Santa Fe firm. …
