Insect Collector Shares Fascination With Students

If anyone knows how to grab a kid's attention and hold it, Ollie Greer does.

"The smaller the scorpion, the more poisonous it is," Greer told a group of wide-eyed fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders as they gawked at dozens of dead but perfectly intact scorpions and spiders pinned up in a glass case.

"The smaller ones will kill you," the 36-year-old amateur entomologist said before turning his attention to other parts of his extensive bug collection. It was on display Thursday at Carlos Gilbert Elementary School, where Greer enthusiastically shared his knowledge of the creatures that have captivated him for 25 years. …
