Sealing of Youths' Records Criticized.(Final)

Prosecutors fear that a new law automatically sealing some juvenile offenders' records will inhibit prosecution of juvenile crimes.

Others say it will infringe on the public's right to know.

But supporters say the point is to give youths a fair chance at turning their lives around.

The automatic sealing of some records is among several Children's Code revisions that go into effect July 1. Court records will be sealed for offenders who go two years with no new allegations. The two-year period starts when the youth is released from custody or supervision.

Records of juveniles who are sentenced as adults will not be automatically sealed. …
