Cases Are Often Difficult To Prove

Advanced technology means stalkers are now using high-tech tools such as the Internet and global-positioning systems to track victims.

Prosecutors, police officers and social workers met in Albuquerque on Wednesday to tackle the problem of stalking and its relationship to domestic violence and sexual assault.

"We don't seem to be prosecuting a lot of these stalking cases, and we wanted to bring it to everybody's attention again," said Joyce Bustos, director of the Administrative Office of District Attorneys, the state agency that organized the conference.

For example, the Albuquerque Police Department pursued nine stalking cases in 2001 -- the most current figure available -- compared to 11,614 domestic violence cases, according to a state report released last year. …
