New Law Earmarks Funds for Treatment

District Attorney Kari Brandenburg warns that her office will be able to prosecute only the most serious DWI offenders unless the state restores about a $200,000 grant that will end next month.

The state DWI Grant Council voted recently to cut off funds the Bernalillo County DA's Office uses to pay six secretaries and two paralegals who work on DWI cases.

Brandenburg says she has asked Gov. Bill Richardson to step in and request that the council reconsider its decision; Richardson says he will do so.

Members of the council, a state legislator and the state Department of Finance Administration say the council's 5-1 vote on April 30 reflects current law directing that council grants go primarily toward treatment and prevention rather than prosecution. …
