For more than 20 years, outdoor enthusiasts have traversed Otero Canyon in the Manzanita Mountains by foot, horseback and mountain bike. With its long trails and spectacular views, it's not surprising the canyon has evoked passionate support.

Just log on to, a Web site whose very existence is a tribute to that enthusiasm, and see the ever-lengthening petition to keep Otero open to the public. Click on the photograph taken from a fire tower to sample the beauty of its views.

At one point in the past week, an online poll taken by 361 visitors to the Web site showed more than 100 use Otero's trails monthly; more than 100 use them weekly and 75 said they travel the trails two or more times a week. …
