State Says Plague Risk Ever Present in Northern N.M.(Journal North)

Plague happens -- especially in Eldorado, according to state health officials.

"When you live in a plague-endemic area like northern New Mexico, there's no such thing as 'no risk' for plague," said Pam Reynolds, an environmental specialist with the state Department of Public Health.

The state Department of Health recently announced that two fleas taken from a live woodrat trapped in Eldorado in March have tested positive for plague.

And a dead woodrat found there in January also tested positive for the disease, the department announced.

When asked whether Eldorado residents should be alarmed about the recent plague findings, Reynolds said, "I don't think they should be constantly worried, but I think they should be aware. …
