Scores Reveal Ethnic Gap In City Schools.(Journal North)

Preliminary results from the Terra Nova standardized test show Santa Fe Public Schools students this year performed about the same as the previous year.

But upsetting to Superintendent Gloria Rendon is data showing Hispanic students scoring far below Anglo students in the district. She held a news conference Wednesday to announce the district's plans for closing the achievement gap.

"The brutal fact is that students from identified minority groups are not performing at acceptable levels in our district," she said. "We have, I believe, always suspected that our minority students were not doing as well. We now have the data to prove it."

The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires districts to disaggregate data from standardized tests by ethnicity, gender and whether students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. …
