DOE Blasts Project's Construction and Cost

A major scientific point of pride for Los Alamos National Laboratory has come under attack in the most recent audit in a series of critical reviews by the Department of Energy's Office of the Inspector General.

A month after LANL celebrated the dedication of its new Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test facility, or DARHT, DOE Inspector General Gregory Friedman is questioning the management of the facility's construction and its cost. DARHT is designed to evaluate aging nuclear triggers in the nation's stockpile without nuclear tests.

"The audit disclosed that DARHT will not be complete before June 2004, 15 months behind schedule," he wrote in a May 22 memo, accompanying the audit. …
