Court Workers to Get Raises.(West Side Journal)

* Council approves $7,500 for the 10 employees

Municipal Court Judge Calvin Shields did his best to defend a pay raise for his 10 employees before the Rio Rancho City Council Wednesday night. His best was good enough.

The council approved a $7,500 pay package for court employees. The original proposal was for $12,520 but the request was reduced by Shields. The judge told the council that the departure of an employee and a miscalculation of one employee's raise accounted for the $5,020 difference.

"As far as I'm concerned, it's a separation of powers issue," Shields told the council. "I think there's only one way you can vote and that's for it; if they don't, they're voting against the Constitution of the United States."

Some opposition

The Municipal Court pay proposal was opposed by Acting City Administrator Ed Chismar and the American Federation of State, County and Muncipal Employees, the union representing 258 city employees. …
