West Mesa's Broncos Program Aims To Keep Kids in School

A program at West Mesa High School aims to help struggling freshman survive the school year and hopefully stay enrolled long enough to graduate, an administrator said.

Broncos is meant to help students who are not quite ready for ninth grade to succeed in high school by offering more intense study in smaller classes with fewer teachers.

While the program's ultimate goal is helping students make it to the finish line, graduation; its more immediate goal is helping them make it through their freshman year.

Success story

Ninth-grader Renee Naranjo was a struggling student when the 2001-02 school year came to a close. She said the divorce of her parents threw her into a depression and she spent most of her eighth-grade year in a daze, failing to learn some crucial academic skills that would allow her to succeed in high school. …
