Lobos Golfers Tied for 17th; Senior Letzig Soars to 5-Over

Facing a monster of a golf course that University of New Mexico men's coach Glen Millican calls "the toughest I've ever seen," the Lobos struggled to a 21-over-par 309 on Tuesday during the opening round of the NCAA Championships in Sillwater, Okla.

That left UNM in a tie with Kentucky for 17th place in the 30-team field at the par-72, 7,301-yard Karsten Course. The Lobos are 10 strokes behind the front-running quartet of North Carolina State, Oklahoma State, Clemson and Auburn, which were atop the leaderboard at 11-over 299.

UNM was led by freshman Jay Choi, who recovered from a rough start to finish with a 1-over 73, tying for 13th with seven other golfers. …
