State Watchdogs Conduct Study

The Department of Energy underestimated how much nuclear waste could leak from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in the future, according to a new analysis by a state watchdog group.

New calculations by the Environmental Evaluation Group, based on the first four years of waste disposal at WIPP, suggest the most dangerous waste is more highly concentrated in the disposal rooms than originally expected.

That increases the risk if someone looking for oil or gas accidentally drills through the underground nuclear waste dump in the future, according to a report by the EEG scientists. …
