San Felipe Aims To Reopen Today

An overwhelmed arroyo drainpipe during a pounding Memorial Day rainstorm caused a flood at San Felipe Pueblo's casino, temporarily shutting it down and causing an estimated $250,000 in damage.

Casino Hollywood acting general manager Will Gonzales said Tuesday that a quick-thinking security officer spared the casino between Albuquerque and Santa Fe from much more damage by hopping in a front-end loader and using dirt to dike up some of the entrances, where water was pouring in.

"As I was coming (to the casino), the flash flood was coming at me -- just gushing out," said Evelyn Esquibel, the secretary-treasurer of the enterprise board that operates the casino. …
