Bush Gives Medal For Slain Deputy

It was the ultimate sacrifice.

Valencia County Sheriff's Deputy Damacio Montano died in the early morning hours of Oct. 6, 2001. Eight months after his death, his memory and his sacrifice were honored in Washington, D.C., at the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial.

Montano's family traveled to the nation's Capitol May 12 to accept the Fraternal Order of Police's National Medal of Honor on his behalf.

Montano's mother, Tomasa McFadden, his brother, Eric, and Sgt. Mark Lujan, of the sheriff's department, attended the annual event along with the families of 384 other police officers who died last year. …
