Statistics about crime at Rio Grande High School got the attention of administrators at Cibola and Valley like flashing lights and sirens.

Rio Grande registered Albuquerque Public Schools' highest number -- 133 -- of reported criminal incidents in the 2001-2002 academic year. This year, the number was 79.

What is the variable in an equation that yields such impressive results? Rio Grande changed the way it handles campus security.

Cibola and Valley administrators want to emulate that change. Under the conventional security model, plain-clothes school security aides patrol campus and report to the principal.
