State Land Commissioner Patrick Lyons took offense last week when he discovered one of his agricultural advisory board members had just shot 19 elk.

The killings were legal. Land Office advisory board member (and ranch manager) Dave Sanchez was acting for the ranch owner, who wanted the elk killed because they were trespassing -- and eating up his hay crop. State law allows landowners with a Game and Fish Department permit to kill elk that cause damage to crops and property, such as fences.

But the image of Sanchez standing in front of the rotting elk carcasses, plus information that landowner Joe Garcia had proceeded with the executions because he thought the Game and Fish Department should have given him a few more private hunting permits this year, was too much for Lyons. …
