Espanola Board OKs Proposal

ESPANOLA -- The Espanola Board of Education has avoided layoffs for the coming school year -- but at a big price.

The board decided to spend most of its cash reserve at a Tuesday meeting, which helped balance a projected $1.7 million shortfall.

The move avoids cutting jobs for this year, but forces school leaders to find savings over the next year so they're not in the same position again.

"This will cover us, so to speak," Associate Superintendent Terry Covert told the board. "But you've got a year to get in line."
