Elk Killer Off Livestock Board

A northern New Mexico ranch manager who killed nearly 20 elk in a dispute with the state Game and Fish Department has been kicked off the state Livestock Board -- the second public panel he's been booted from in less than a week.

Gov. Bill Richardson on Tuesday removed David Sanchez from the volunteer board. He had appointed the Rio Arriba County man earlier this year.

" ... In light of your recent actions which have been widely publicized, I have lost confidence in your ability to appropriately represent my administration," Richardson said in a brief letter to Sanchez.

The "recent actions" were the killing of 19 elk, some pregnant, which Sanchez shot on May 10 and May 14 under a state law allowing ranchers to kill animals threatening their crops. …
