2 New Community Programs Planted

U.S. Attorney David Iglesias is excited about doing some gardening.

He says he hopes having the fifth annual national conference for Weed and Seed, a Department of Justice neighborhood crime prevention program, in Albuquerque this week will serve as an energetic kickoff to two newly designated weed-and-seed communities in New Mexico.

An area on the West Side and one in Espanola now join active weed-and-seed communities in the Trumbull-La Mesa area in Albuquerque and the Mesquite Street neighborhood in Las Cruces.

Neighborhoods designated weed-and-seed sites are given funds through a federal grant for law enforcement to "weed" out criminals and for communities to "seed" the area with youth programs and other human services. …
