Twenty-one seniors from 11 Albuquerque schools, five alternative schools and five outlying schools in Bernalillo, Los Lunas, Belen, Moriarty and Rio Rancho have been named Thunderbird Award winners.

Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin created the Thunderbird Awards in 1994 to acknowledge graduating seniors who have achieved success despite challenges in their lives and act as role models for other at-risk teens.

The winners were honored at a recent luncheon, with their school principals, families and other community guests.

Don Carson, head of public relations and communications at Sandia, told the students that the money they were given was not a gift but "our investment in your future. …
