TRIBE OPENS A TRAVEL CENTER WITH SLOTS AND STARTS CONSTRUCTING A BIGGER INN AND CASINO

The Mescalero Apache tribe has just opened a sprawling, $6.6 million travel center and mini-casino, and construction is well under way on new 275-room Inn of the Mountain Gods that includes a 26,000-square-foot casino.

The tribe's Casino Apache Travel Center, which opened last Thursday, is spread over 50,000 square feet on U.S. 70 about a mile west of Ruidoso.

It includes:

* 16,000 square feet of gambling space with 460 slot machines and 12 table games;

* A convenience store;

* A 140-seat restaurant called Smokey B's Grill;

* Two bars with video poker machines;

* A smoke shop selling discounted cigarettes; and

* A gas station and truck stop with showers. …
