New Mexico's tourism industry hopes that drought won't hurt business too much this summer

On a sunny spring afternoon last week in the Jemez Mountains, Carol Balsley sat next to a babbling brook and munched on a well-earned turkey sandwich.

A few dozen feet away lay the mountain bike she had ridden up a rocky, sometimes steep forest road to the lush meadow in which she enjoyed her lunch and peace of mind.

"It re-energizes me and puts me in touch with my soul," said the fit 38-year-old insurance executive from Pittsburgh. "It sounds flaky, but I just love this. I will definitely be back."

New Mexico businesses that cater to adventure-hungry tourists like Balsley will be glad to have her. …
